Conference “New technology for steel structures in Vietnam and Japan”

On Tuesday November 28th 2017, The National University of Civil Engineering (NUCE) and Japanese Steel Corporation JFE co-organized a conference entitled “New technology for steel structures in Vietnam and Japan” in cooperation with the Institute of Transport Science and Technology (ITST) and Shimizu Group from Japan.

Panorama of the conference

Participants included, from Japanese partners: Mr. Shichinobu Nasu – Vice Director of JFE Steel Corporation, Dr. Kamura – Vice Director of JFE Laboratory and leading experts in steel structures from Japan.

From the NUCE: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Xuan Anh – Deputy Secretary of the University Communist Party Committee and Vice Rector, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hoang Giang – Head of the Department of International Corporation, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Linh – Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Construction, Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Head of the Department of Steel and Timber Construction, Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh, Director of the University Consultant Corporation Co. Ltd. (CCU), Mr. Nguyen Quang Loc – Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of VECC, along with lecturers and students.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Xuan Anh – Vice Rector of the NUCE – made an opening speech and welcomed the JFE staff to the conference. He said that the conference was a meaningful activity for Vietnamese civil engineers in steel structural engineering, and the knowledge of steel structures could be useful in the application of these structures to buildings in Vietnam. In addition, the conference was another good opportunity for experts from both the NUCE and JFE to exchange the experience and ideas that would contribute to a more sustainable cooperation between the two partners.

Dr. Kamura – Vice Director of JFE Laboratory from Japan – expressed his pleasure to visit Vietnam and gratitude towards the NUCE for a warm welcome. He said that JFE and the NUCE officially signed an MoU in 2012 and this was the fifth professional conference ever organized on steel structures to introduce new technology in steel structures in Japan as well as in Vietnam to the public. He hoped that this conference would be a good opportunity for Vietnamese and Japanese specialists to discuss, give comments, propose ideas and exchange viewpoints over solutions and application of new technology in civil engineering to sustainable development.

Dr. Kamura – Vice Director of JFE Steel Laboratory from Japan – delivered a speech at the conference

The conference presented new material technologies for steel and the participants shared experience in the application of steel technology to the building industry towards sustainability with the following themes:

  • X1 building project – the NUCE – Application of the NUCE – JFE research outcomes of Combeam;
  • Advanced steel structures and their applications to high-rise buildings;
  • Weather-proof steel and application to bridge construction in Vietnam;
  • Introduction of new pile foundation (Tsubasa pile) – with high load-bearing capacity and environment-friendly construction method and Ganpile as a construction method for hard rock underground;
  • Application of pile foundation and steel tube scaffolding for Binh Khanh bridge piers;
