In 2018, the 30th National Olympiad in Mechanics was organized on the 15th April 2018 at 3 locations: National University of Civil Engineering (Northern Region), University of Science and Technology – The University of Danang (Central Region), and Ho Chi Minh City Open University (Southern Region) attracting 1262 competitors from 39 universities and institutes nationwide.

Students compete in 12 Mechanics subjects including: Theoretical Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Structural Mechanics, Hydraulics, Soil Mechanics, Machine Details, Principles of Machine, Computer Application in Machine Details, Computer Application in Strength of Materials, Computer Application in Structural Mechanics, and Computer Application in Principles of Machine.

In two days, 21st and 22nd April 2018 at NUCE, the Board of Judges consisting of senior lecturers and scientists in Mechanics has enthusiastically, fairly and objectively graded the papers. Final results yield 241 Individual prizes (make up 19% of all competitors) including: 15 First prizes (1,2%), 75 Second prizes (6%), 151 Third prizes (12%) and 465 Consolation prizes. There are 42 Team prizes including: 12 First prizes, 12 Second prizes and 18 Third prizes. Especially, among the 15 First individual prizes, 02 students are honored to be rewarded with the Nguyen Van Dao Mechanical Talent Fund award.

Delivering his welcome speech, Assoc. Prof. Pham Xuan Anh – Vice-Secretary of the Party Committee, Vice-Rector of NUCE, on behalf of all staffs, lecturers and students of NUCE, congratulated 16 delegates of universities, colleges who have joined the Closing Ceremony and Award Ceremony of the 30th National Olympiad in Mechanics. Assoc. Prof. Pham Xuan Anh stressed that National Olympiad of Mechanics is not only a valuable playground for students who love mechanics, but has also become a core activity, a place to initiate and spread learning spirits to students in universities. The competition contributes in enforcing the studying and researching environment, raising the education quality of education institutes. Through the competitions, training institutes discover, train and encourage talents in mechanics, thus help them develop and become technicians or researchers in their majors.

National University of Civil Engineering – one of the hosts of the 30th National Olympiad in Mechanics in 2018 sent a total of 124 competitors in a delegation to the contest. NUCE students have collected 84 prizes, including 3 First individual prizes, 13 Second individual prizes, 22 Third individual prizes and 46 Consolation individual prizes, which resulted in the Second prize among all delegations. Being one of the few female students participating in the contest, Ms. Mai Thi Thuy – 4th year student from the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Building, NUCE was awarded with the First prize in Structural. Minh Thuy shared: “When joining such contests, we always feel an urge to explore related knowledge. Moreover, this is also a chance for me to find out about my potentials. The Olympiad is one of my big steps towards a strong base of knowledge, thus enabling me to perform better when graduated. Although it is relatively challenging for female students to pursue mechanics subjects, we are lucky to receive great attentions throughout our learning process”.

Through 30 held contests, the National Olympiad in Mechanics has been gradually expanding with respect to the number of subjects, participating universities, and participating students. The first Olympiad in 1989 was organized for only 2 theoretical subjects with the participation of 7 universities and 66 competitors. After 30 years, in 2018 the Olympiad challenges students in 12 subjects, and joined by 39 universities with a grand total of 1.262 competitors. The National Olympiad in Mechanics has truly become an intellectual playground, a place to initiate the fire in learning and research, as well as a launching pad for young scientists. Throughout the past 30 years, NUCE holds the second place among 3 universities with best results with 559 Individual prizes, 98 Team prizes (1. Hanoi University of Science and Technology; 2. National University of Civil Engineering; 3. Military Technical Academy).
